What is Microdermabrasion? A CurrentBody Guide

Skønhed

If you’re after touchably soft and youthful looking skin, Microdermabrasion might be the miracle treatment you’ve been looking for. It’s been hailed as the next best alternative to a face life, and could replace some of the beauty industries more sinister anti-ageing treatments, including Botox and chemical peels.

How Does it Work?

Put simply, microdermabrasion is the removal of the top layer of the skin’s epidermis by applying rough grains to the surface of the skin. This can either be done by spraying the skin with grains, or by using a mechanical action, in the form of a diamond, grain, or plastic coated disk. In the case of the Riiviva Microderm Facial Exfoliator, this rough action is delivered by a diamond tip – the same kind used in cosmetic clinics. The dead skin cells and impurities are then removed by a vacuum built into the middle, ensuring you’re left with clean and youthful looking skin. The PMD Personal Microderm device utilises aluminium oxide micro crystal disks to gently ease away the top layer of skin, revealing healthy and glowing skin below.

What can it treat?

Since it is only dealing with the very upper level of skin, microdermabrasion is a safe treatment suitable for a variety of skin concerns – from acne scarring to dry skin. But the real appeal of this wonder treatment is in its anti-ageing benefits, promising to take care of everything from wrinkles to Crow’s Feet. After a microdermabrasion treatment, your pores will be clear and minimised, and your skin will be more susceptible to your skin cream or serum, as it will be able to reach deeper into the dermis.

Does it hurt?

Users describe microdermabrasion as a sensation similar to a cat’s rough tongue, or to light pin pricks. After a microdermabrasion treatment, your skin may be sensitive or slightly pink for 24 hours– this is simply because the top layer of skin has been removed, prompting your skin to create a healthy new layer.
